  7. Why Your Heat Pump...

Why Your Heat Pump Isn’t Switching to Heat Mode

A heat pump is a very popular and versatile system because it works to both heat and cool your home. But sometimes your heat pump can have problems when switching between heating mode and cooling mode. When this happens, you may be tempted to find a DIY solution, but this can cause more harm than good.

If you need heat pump repair in Smyrna, TN, our team can help. First, you can keep reading to learn more about heat pump problems. Then you can give us a call to come out and address any issues that you’re experiencing. Ideally, you want to fix any heat pump problems sooner rather than later. Otherwise, they will only get worse.

Reversing Valve

Your heat pump is able to switch between modes because it has a reversing valve. This valve helps to switch the direction that your system’s refrigerant flows in allowing it to either remove heat in the summer or bring in heat in the winter. It’s possible for the wiring to wear down or the actual valve itself to fail.

Your heat pump uses refrigerant for heating and cooling, so it’s also possible to have a leak in the refrigerant line near the reversing valve. If this happens, it can block the switch from moving how it needs to change between modes. The valve can get stuck so that it will only operate in a single mode – either heating or cooling.

Thermostat

If you switch your thermostat from heating to cooling, it should communicate with your heat pump to do the same. Sometimes, the connection gets interrupted or your thermostat gets miscalibrated. This is usually an easy fix, although sometimes your thermostat may need to be replaced. If you have a thermostat that has not been updated in the last 10 years then we’d say an upgrade is a good idea to consider this season.

Other Heat Pump Problems

It’s also possible to have heat pump issues when the valve is in the correct mode. If the heat pump is set to heating, you should never feel cool or lukewarm air. If you do, that is a red flag. Even if your home feels comfortable, you should get the problem checked out before your heat pump stops working completely. Potential problems to be on the alert for include:

  • Screeching noises caused by worn, unlubricated motor parts.
  • Odd smells created by dirty coils or condensate pans.
  • Short cycling created by refrigerant leaks, evaporator coil issues, or a bad thermostat.
  • Weakened airflow caused by issues with the blower motor or blower fan.

Heat pumps are made to operate effectively and efficiently but this doesn’t make them invicible. Even the most high-tech system will need repair at least once in its lifespan. When your heat pump develops a problem that a tune-up doesn’t address, the best option is to talk to our team to get the issue diagnosed and fixed.
